5-Fluorocytosine, also known as flucytosine, is a synthetic antifungal medication primarily used in combination with amphotericin B for the treatment of serious systemic fungal infections, particularly cryptococcal meningitis and candidiasis. It belongs to the pyrimidine analog class of antifungals and works by interfering with fungal RNA and DNA synthesis, thereby inhibiting fungal growth. It is generally well-tolerated but can cause serious side effects, including bone marrow suppression and liver damage.
