Brand: Sintrom, Nicoumalone
Acenocoumarol is an anticoagulant medication used to prevent and treat thromboembolic events such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It belongs to the class of drugs known as coumarins and works by inhibiting the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the liver. This leads to a reduction in the production of these factors, thereby decreasing the blood's ability to clot.
Used to prevent and treat blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Synergistic effect on platelet function and coagulation cascade
Outcome:
Increased anticoagulant effect
Mechanism:
Inhibition of acenocoumarol metabolism
Outcome:
Decreased anticoagulant effect
Mechanism:
High in vitamin K, which counteracts the effects of acenocoumarol
Most likely new formulation: New dosage forms or drug delivery systems to improve patient compliance (Year: 2026, 30% confidence)
Based on historical data and current usage trends, there is a low probability (<5%) of acenocoumarol gaining FDA approval in the near future.
