For glaucoma, epilepsy, altitude sickness, and periodic paralysis.
Outcome:
Increased risk of acetazolamide toxicity
Mechanism:
Both drugs are weak acids; competition for renal excretion
Outcome:
Altered excretion of amphetamines
Mechanism:
Changes in urinary pH can affect amphetamine elimination.
Outcome:
Decreased effectiveness of acetazolamide
Mechanism:
Sodium bicarbonate can counteract the metabolic acidosis induced by acetazolamide
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation for improved patient compliance (Year: 2026, 30% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial activity, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of any major regulatory changes for acetazolamide in the next 2 years.
