Acipimox is a nicotinic acid derivative used to lower blood lipid levels, specifically triglycerides and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. It belongs to the class of lipid-lowering agents and works by inhibiting the release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue, which in turn reduces the synthesis of triglycerides in the liver.
