Adefovir dipivoxil is an antiviral medication used to treat chronic hepatitis B. It belongs to a class of drugs called nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors and works by interfering with the replication of the hepatitis B virus. It is generally used when other treatments are not effective or tolerated. It is available as an oral tablet.
For the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection in adults.
Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B have been reported in patients who discontinue anti-hepatitis B therapy, including adefovir dipivoxil. Hepatic function should be monitored closely with both clinical and laboratory follow-up for at least several months in patients who discontinue anti-hepatitis B therapy.
