Alfuzosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker primarily used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges and obstructs urine flow. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow and reducing BPH symptoms. Alfuzosin belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-blockers.
Used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Outcome:
Increased alfuzosin levels, increased risk of side effects
Mechanism:
Inhibition of alfuzosin metabolism
Outcome:
Increased risk of dizziness and orthostatic hypotension
Mechanism:
Additive vasodilatory effects
Outcome:
Slightly reduced alfuzosin absorption
Mechanism:
Chelation or altered gastric pH
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation with improved tolerability (Year: 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low probability ( <10%) of any major regulatory changes for alfuzosin in the next 5 years.
