Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) primarily used to treat major depressive disorder. It affects the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, specifically norepinephrine and serotonin, which are believed to play a role in mood regulation. Besides depression, amitriptyline is also prescribed for various other conditions, including nerve pain (neuropathy), migraine prevention, and nocturnal enuresis in children.
