Amoxapine is a tetracyclic antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder. It belongs to the dibenzoxazepine class and is structurally similar to the neuroleptic loxapine. Amoxapine works by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, two neurotransmitters in the brain. It also blocks dopamine receptors, which may contribute to its antipsychotic effects. Unlike other tetracyclic antidepressants, amoxapine has a more potent dopamine blocking effect.
