Amphetamine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that belongs to the phenethylamine class of drugs. It increases the activity of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, leading to enhanced alertness, focus, and energy. It is used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Misuse can lead to serious cardiovascular risks and addiction.
Used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy.
Amphetamines have a high potential for abuse and dependence. Sudden death has occurred in children and adolescents with structural cardiac abnormalities or other serious heart problems. Adults have also experienced sudden death, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Stimulants should not be used in patients with known structural cardiac abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, serious heart rhythm abnormalities, severe hypertension, or advanced arteriosclerosis.
