Brand: Agenerase
Amprenavir is an antiviral medication specifically classified as a protease inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the protease enzyme of HIV, preventing the virus from replicating and maturing. This helps to reduce the viral load in the body and slow the progression of HIV infection. Amprenavir is no longer widely used due to the development of newer, more effective, and better-tolerated HIV medications.
Used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV-1 infection.
Outcome:
Reduced amprenavir levels, potential treatment failure
Mechanism:
Induction of CYP3A4 enzymes
Outcome:
Increased amprenavir levels
Mechanism:
Inhibition of CYP3A4
Outcome:
May slightly increase amprenavir levels
Mechanism:
Inhibition of CYP3A4
No significant new formulations or indications for amprenavir are anticipated.
Due to the availability of safer and more effective alternatives, the likelihood of amprenavir being prescribed will remain very low.
