Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. It acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This unique mechanism of action helps to stabilize dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, reducing symptoms of psychosis, mania, and depression.
For schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder, and Tourette's disorder.
Increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults. Compulsive or uncontrollable urges to gamble, binge eat, shop, and have sex have been reported.
