Brand: Azactam
Aztreonam is a synthetic monobactam antibiotic primarily used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It is particularly effective against aerobic, Gram-negative rods like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Aztreonam disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell death. Unlike other beta-lactam antibiotics, it has minimal cross-reactivity with penicillins and cephalosporins, making it a suitable option for patients with allergies to these drug classes.
For treating infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria, especially in patients with penicillin allergies.
Outcome:
Reduced aztreonam efficacy
Mechanism:
Competition for renal excretion
Outcome:
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity
Mechanism:
Additive renal toxicity
Outcome:
Reduced aztreonam absorption
Mechanism:
Chelation or altered gastric pH
Most likely new formulation: extended-release injectable (2025, 60% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and emerging resistance patterns, there is a 20% likelihood of new guidelines for aztreonam usage within the next 5 years.
