Barium sulfate is a radiopaque contrast agent used in medical imaging to enhance the visibility of internal structures, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. It is insoluble in water and is administered orally or rectally. Because it doesn't get absorbed into the bloodstream, it's generally safe for most patients, even those with allergies to other contrast agents containing iodine.
Used as a contrast agent for imaging of the gastrointestinal tract.
Outcome:
Reduced efficacy of barium sulfate contrast
Mechanism:
Delayed transit time may hinder proper coating of the GI tract.
Outcome:
Reduced absorption of the antibiotic
Mechanism:
Chelation with barium sulfate.
Outcome:
Increased risk of dehydration
Mechanism:
Additive effects on bowel movements.
Potential innovations may include improved formulations for enhanced palatability or more targeted delivery (2025-2030, 70% confidence).
Given its long history of safe use and established efficacy, barium sulfate's regulatory status is unlikely to change significantly in the near future (<1% chance of withdrawal in the next 5 years).
