Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. It belongs to a class of drugs that work by blocking the production of a substance called angiotensin II, which narrows blood vessels. This vasodilation helps to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart. Benazepril is often prescribed in combination with other medications, such as diuretics.
For treating high blood pressure, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.
Fetal toxicity: Use of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death. Resulting oligohydramnios can be associated with fetal lung hypoplasia and skeletal deformations. Potentially other adverse effects include skull hypoplasia, anuria, hypotension, renal failure, and death. When pregnancy is detected, discontinue benazepril as soon as possible. Neonates with a history of in utero exposure to benazepril should be closely observed for hypotension, oliguria, and hyperkalemia.
Outcome:
Hyperkalemia
Mechanism:
Reduced potassium excretion
Outcome:
Increased risk of hypotension
Mechanism:
Additive effects on blood pressure lowering
Outcome:
Slight delay in absorption
Mechanism:
Delayed gastric emptying
Most likely new formulation: Combination therapy with other antihypertensive drugs (2024, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low likelihood of any major regulatory changes for benazepril in the next 5 years.
