Brand: Cedur, Bezalip, Bezaf
Bezafibrate is a fibrate medication primarily used to lower high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood. It belongs to the class of lipid-lowering agents and works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), which leads to increased lipoprotein lipase activity and reduced hepatic triglyceride production. It can be beneficial in managing mixed dyslipidemia, a condition characterized by elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and increased very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. While bezafibrate can improve the lipid profile, it is generally considered a second-line treatment after lifestyle modifications and statins.
Used to lower high triglycerides and cholesterol levels in the blood, particularly in mixed dyslipidemia.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Bezafibrate can displace warfarin from plasma proteins, increasing its free concentration.
Outcome:
Reduced bezafibrate absorption
Mechanism:
Cholestyramine binds to bezafibrate in the gut.
Outcome:
Slightly reduced bezafibrate absorption
Mechanism:
Altered gastric pH
Most likely new formulation: Controlled-release formulation (Year: 2026, 60% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and ongoing research, there is a 70% likelihood that bezafibrate will maintain its current regulatory status over the next 5 years.
