Brand: Dostinex, Cabaser, Cabergoline Mylan
Cabergoline is a dopamine receptor agonist, specifically a D2 receptor agonist, primarily used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin in the blood). It belongs to the ergoline class of drugs and acts by mimicking the effects of dopamine in the brain, leading to a decrease in prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland. It is also used off-label for Parkinson's disease.
Used to treat hyperprolactinemia and sometimes Parkinson's disease.
Outcome:
Reduced efficacy of cabergoline
Mechanism:
Dopamine antagonist blocks dopamine receptors, counteracting cabergoline's agonist effects
Outcome:
Decreased efficacy of both drugs
Mechanism:
Pharmacodynamic antagonism
Outcome:
May slightly delay absorption
Mechanism:
Altered gastric emptying
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release injectable (Year: 2026, 60% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and ongoing research, there is a low likelihood of significant regulatory changes to cabergoline's status in the near future (less than 5% chance in the next 2 years).
