Cantril, generically known as acetylcysteine, is a mucolytic agent primarily used to thin and loosen mucus in the respiratory tract. It is commonly used to treat conditions like cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory illnesses where thick mucus secretions are a problem. Acetylcysteine works by breaking disulfide bonds in the mucus, reducing its viscosity and making it easier to cough up.
