Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. Cefpodoxime is effective against a broad range of bacteria, including those causing respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It is available in both oral and injectable forms, with the oral form (cefpodoxime proxetil) being more commonly used.
Cefpodoxime is used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, skin and skin structure infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Cefpodoxime can interfere with vitamin K metabolism, potentiating the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Outcome:
Reduced cefpodoxime absorption
Mechanism:
Antacids can alter gastric pH, affecting drug absorption.
Outcome:
Disulfiram-like reaction (rare)
Mechanism:
Cefpodoxime can inhibit aldehyde dehydrogenase.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation (2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and resistance patterns, there is a 15% likelihood of increased restrictions on cefpodoxime use in the next 5 years.
