Chlorpropamide is a first-generation sulfonylurea medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by stimulating insulin release from the pancreas, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. It belongs to the class of antidiabetic agents and is generally prescribed when diet and exercise alone are insufficient to control blood sugar. It has a long duration of action and is associated with a higher risk of hypoglycemia compared to newer sulfonylureas.
