Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidney, leading to increased excretion of water and electrolytes. It belongs to the sulfonamide class of drugs and is considered a long-acting diuretic, meaning its effects can last for up to 72 hours.
For treating high blood pressure (hypertension).
Outcome:
Increased risk of digoxin toxicity due to chlorthalidone-induced hypokalemia.
Mechanism:
Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia)
Outcome:
Additive hypotensive effects.
Mechanism:
Both substances can lower blood pressure.
Outcome:
Slightly reduced absorption of chlorthalidone.
Mechanism:
Changes in gastric pH.
Most likely new formulation: extended-release combination therapy with other antihypertensive agents (2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of chlorthalidone facing regulatory changes in the next 5 years.
