Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Ciprofloxacin is effective against a wide range of gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria.
