Brand: Cleocin, Dalacin C, Clindesse
Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing their growth and reproduction. Clindamycin is effective against gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including some strains resistant to other antibiotics like erythromycin. However, it is not effective against gram-negative bacteria or enterococci.
For bacterial infections like skin infections, bone infections, gynecological infections, and intra-abdominal infections.
Clindamycin can cause severe and potentially fatal colitis (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea). Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of colitis, such as persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.
Outcome:
Increased neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism:
Additive neuromuscular blocking effects
Outcome:
Reduced absorption of clindamycin
Mechanism:
Adsorption of clindamycin to kaolin-pectin
Outcome:
Slightly delayed absorption
Mechanism:
Presence of food in the stomach
Most likely new formulation: sustained-release injectable (Year 2025, 80% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and resistance patterns, there is a 70% likelihood of new guidelines for clindamycin use in skin infections being issued within the next 3 years.
