Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the skin, such as athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch, as well as vaginal yeast infections. It belongs to the azole class of antifungals, which work by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased permeability of the fungal cell membrane, causing leakage of cellular contents and ultimately fungal cell death.
