Colestimide is a bile acid sequestrant, a type of medication used to lower cholesterol levels. It works by binding to bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. This leads the liver to use cholesterol to produce more bile acids, thus lowering the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Colestimide is primarily prescribed for individuals with high cholesterol who cannot tolerate or do not respond well to statins.
