Conjugated estrogens are a mixture of estrogen hormones derived from natural sources and used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) primarily to treat menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. They belong to the class of steroid hormones and work by mimicking the effects of naturally occurring estrogens in the body. Conjugated estrogens are also indicated for the treatment of vulvar and vaginal atrophy and hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration, or primary ovarian failure. Furthermore, they are sometimes used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Used primarily for treating menopausal symptoms, vulvar and vaginal atrophy, hypoestrogenism, and osteoporosis prevention in postmenopausal women.
Estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer in postmenopausal women. The addition of a progestin reduces the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, which may be a precursor to endometrial cancer. Estrogens, with or without progestins, should be prescribed at the lowest effective doses and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for the individual woman. Estrogens, with or without progestins, increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders, including venous thromboembolism, stroke, and coronary heart disease. Estrogens, with or without progestins, increase the risk of probable dementia in postmenopausal women 65 years of age or older.
