Brand: Seromycin, D-Cyclosine
D-cycloserine is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis, particularly multidrug-resistant strains. It is a structural analog of D-alanine and inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with two enzymes, alanine racemase and D-alanyl-D-alanine synthetase. It belongs to the oxazolidinone class of antibiotics. D-cycloserine can cross the blood-brain barrier and has been investigated for its potential in treating neurological and psychiatric conditions.
For the treatment of tuberculosis, particularly drug-resistant strains, and investigational use in neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Outcome:
Increased risk of seizures
Mechanism:
Additive CNS depressant effects
Outcome:
Increased theophylline levels
Mechanism:
May inhibit theophylline metabolism
Outcome:
Reduced D-cycloserine absorption
Mechanism:
Chelation or altered pH
Most likely new formulation: Liposomal D-cycloserine for improved CNS penetration and reduced toxicity (Year 2026, 70% confidence)
Based on increasing antibiotic resistance, the usage of D-cycloserine for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is predicted to increase by 15% in the next 5 years.
