Dalteparin is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) anticoagulant used to prevent and treat blood clots. It belongs to a class of drugs called glycosaminoglycans, specifically heparins. Dalteparin works by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, which inhibits several coagulation factors, primarily factor Xa and thrombin. This reduces the formation of fibrin, a key component of blood clots.
For prevention and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and unstable angina, and during hemodialysis.
Epidural or spinal hematomas may occur in patients treated with low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) and neuraxial anesthesia or spinal puncture. These hematomas may result in long-term or permanent paralysis. Consider these risks when scheduling patients for spinal procedures.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Both drugs inhibit platelet function and coagulation.
Outcome:
Potential increased risk of bleeding with high doses of acetaminophen
Mechanism:
May potentiate anticoagulant effects.
Outcome:
Potential decreased absorption of dalteparin
Mechanism:
Antacids can bind to dalteparin.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release dalteparin for simplified dosing (Year: 2026, 75% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial outcomes, there is a 90% likelihood of dalteparin remaining a first-line treatment for DVT prophylaxis in surgical patients.
