Eflornithine is an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, an enzyme required for polyamine biosynthesis. It is used topically to reduce unwanted facial hair growth in women (hirsutism) and intravenously to treat African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness). It belongs to the class of antiprotozoal agents and enzyme inhibitors.
