Dihydroergotamine is an ergot alkaloid used to treat migraine headaches. It constricts blood vessels in the brain, which is thought to be its primary mechanism for relieving migraine pain. It is available in various formulations, including nasal spray, injection, and intravenous infusion. Dihydroergotamine belongs to the class of vasoconstrictors.
For the treatment of acute migraine headaches with or without aura.
Dihydroergotamine is contraindicated in patients with ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, and sepsis. It should not be used within 24 hours of other vasoconstrictors or triptans.
