Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), also known as succimer, is a chelating agent used to treat heavy metal poisoning, particularly lead, mercury, and arsenic. It's a water-soluble analog of dimercaprol (BAL) with fewer side effects. DMSA binds to the metal ions, forming a stable complex that is then excreted in the urine. It is typically administered orally.
For treating lead, mercury, and arsenic poisoning.
Outcome:
Reduced efficacy of DMSA
Mechanism:
Competition for chelation
Outcome:
Reduced DMSA absorption
Mechanism:
Calcium binding
Outcome:
Slightly decreased absorption
Mechanism:
Delayed gastric emptying
Most likely new formulation: sustained-release formulation (Year: 2025, 30% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low probability ( <5%) of any significant regulatory changes for DMSA in the near future.
