Brand: Taxotere
Docetaxel is a chemotherapy medication used to treat various types of cancer, including breast, lung, prostate, stomach, and head and neck cancers. It belongs to the taxane class of drugs, which are plant-derived antimicrotubule agents. Docetaxel works by interfering with the normal function of microtubules, essential components of the cell's structure and division process. By disrupting microtubule function, docetaxel inhibits cell division and ultimately leads to cancer cell death.
For the treatment of breast, lung, prostate, stomach, and head and neck cancers.
Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Severe fluid retention may occur. Patients with severe neutropenia should receive prophylactic G-CSF. Hepatic impairment can increase the risk of toxicity.
Outcome:
Increased risk of docetaxel-induced neutropenia
Mechanism:
Cisplatin may impair bone marrow function.
Outcome:
Altered warfarin effect
Mechanism:
Competition for metabolic pathways.
Outcome:
Reduced docetaxel absorption
Mechanism:
Chelation of docetaxel in the gut.
Most likely new formulation: Nanoparticle-based drug delivery system for improved efficacy and reduced toxicity (2025, 80% confidence).
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a 70% likelihood of expanded indications for docetaxel in other cancer types within the next 5 years.
