Domperidone is a dopamine antagonist primarily used to relieve nausea and vomiting. It acts by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) located in the brain, which is responsible for inducing vomiting. Domperidone also increases the motility or contractions of the stomach and intestines, helping to speed up the passage of food through the digestive system. It is classified as a peripheral dopamine antagonist due to its limited ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, reducing the likelihood of central nervous system side effects.
