Dutasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a selective inhibitor of both the type 1 and type 2 isoforms of steroid 5 alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It's primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and can also be used in some cases of male pattern hair loss. Dutasteride belongs to the class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
