Brand: Phospholine Iodide
Echothiophate iodide is a long-acting, irreversible cholinesterase inhibitor used primarily in the treatment of glaucoma. It belongs to the class of organophosphate compounds and works by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine in the eye, leading to miosis (pupil constriction) and a decrease in intraocular pressure. It is typically administered as an ophthalmic solution.
Used to treat glaucoma, particularly open-angle glaucoma and accommodative esotropia.
Outcome:
Prolonged apnea
Mechanism:
Increased acetylcholine activity at neuromuscular junctions.
Outcome:
Reduced efficacy of echothiophate
Mechanism:
Atropine antagonizes the muscarinic effects of acetylcholine.
Outcome:
Potential for reduced efficacy of echothiophate
Mechanism:
Caffeine can have mild anticholinergic effects.
Most likely new formulation: sustained-release implant (Year: 2030, 30% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and safety profile, there is a low (<5%) likelihood of regulatory changes in the next 5 years.
