Epinephrine is a catecholamine, a sympathomimetic hormone and neurotransmitter, that plays a crucial role in the body's "fight-or-flight" response. It acts on both alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors, increasing heart rate, strengthening the force of heart contractions, opening airways in the lungs, and narrowing blood vessels. Epinephrine is used to treat a number of conditions, including anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and severe asthma attacks.
