Esmolol is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker used for rapid control of ventricular rate in patients with supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (SVT), including sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and atrial flutter. It is also used for intraoperative and postoperative hypertension and tachycardia. Esmolol acts by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate and contractility. Its ultra-short duration of action makes it particularly useful for situations requiring rapid onset and offset of beta-blockade.
For rapid control of heart rate in supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, intraoperative and postoperative hypertension, and tachycardia.
