Estrone is a steroidal estrogen, primarily produced in the ovaries and peripheral tissues. It plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. While less potent than estradiol, estrone contributes to the overall estrogenic effects in the body. It can be converted to estradiol and estriol, and its levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. After menopause, estrone becomes the predominant circulating estrogen.
Used primarily in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms.
Estrogens have been reported to increase the risk of endometrial cancer in postmenopausal women. The addition of a progestin reduces this risk. Estrogens, with or without progestins, should be prescribed at the lowest effective doses and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for the individual woman.
