Etodolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation. It belongs to the class of pyranocarboxylic acids and works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins, substances that mediate pain and inflammation. Etodolac is available in both immediate-release and extended-release formulations.

Etodolac, like other NSAIDs, carries a black box warning for increased risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal. It also carries a black box warning for increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation, which can be fatal.
