Fenofibrate is a fibrate medication primarily used to lower high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It belongs to the class of amphipathic carboxylic acids and works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), which increases the activity of lipoprotein lipase and reduces the production of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). This leads to a decrease in triglycerides and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
For lowering high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.
