Fenofibric acid, commonly known as fenofibrate, is a fibric acid derivative (fibrate) primarily used to lower high levels of fats (lipids) in the blood, such as triglycerides and cholesterol. It belongs to the class of lipid-lowering agents and works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), which increases the breakdown and elimination of triglycerides and reduces the production of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. Fenofibrate is often prescribed when lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, are not enough to control lipid levels. It can be used alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering medications, such as statins.
For lowering high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood.
Outcome:
Increased bleeding risk
Mechanism:
Fenofibrate can displace warfarin from protein binding sites, increasing its free concentration.
Outcome:
Increased risk of gallstones
Mechanism:
Additive effects on biliary cholesterol secretion.
Outcome:
Reduced fenofibrate absorption
Mechanism:
Antacids may alter pH and affect absorption.
Most likely new formulation: Controlled-release formulation to improve patient compliance (Year: 2025, 70% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of any major regulatory changes for fenofibrate in the next 2 years.
