Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that acts as a selective inhibitor of type II 5α-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It's primarily used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride helps shrink the prostate and slow hair loss.
