Flucloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is used to treat infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, particularly staphylococci resistant to other penicillins such as methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Flucloxacillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
For the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, especially staphylococci.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding
Mechanism:
Flucloxacillin can displace warfarin from protein binding sites.
Outcome:
Increased risk of bleeding (if taken with high-dose flucloxacillin)
Mechanism:
Additive effects on platelet function.
Outcome:
Delayed absorption
Mechanism:
Food can slow the absorption of flucloxacillin.
Most likely new formulation: Extended-release formulation (Year: 2025, 60% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and resistance patterns, there is a 70% likelihood that flucloxacillin will remain a first-line treatment for MSSA infections for the next 5 years.
