Brand: Fucidin, Fucithalmic
Fusidic acid is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic primarily effective against Gram-positive bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with the translocation step on the ribosome. Fusidic acid is typically used topically for skin infections and occasionally systemically for serious infections, often in combination with other antibiotics to prevent resistance development. It belongs to the class of fusidanes, a unique group of steroidal antibiotics.
For treating skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA.
Outcome:
Increased bleeding risk
Mechanism:
Fusidic acid can displace warfarin from plasma proteins, increasing its free concentration.
Outcome:
Generally no significant interaction
Mechanism:
None known
Outcome:
May slightly delay absorption
Mechanism:
Not fully understood
Most likely new formulation: Topical combination with a corticosteroid for enhanced anti-inflammatory effects (2025, 70% confidence).
Based on historical usage patterns and emerging resistance trends, there is a 15% likelihood of increased restrictions on fusidic acid use within the next 5 years.
