Gatifloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This action leads to bacterial cell death, making gatifloxacin effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.
