Brand: Hep-Lock, Calciparine
Heparin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots. It is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan and belongs to a class of drugs called antithrombotics. Heparin is used to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as in the management of certain heart conditions like unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction. It is also frequently administered during certain medical procedures like dialysis and open-heart surgery to prevent clot formation.
Used to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions like deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, unstable angina, and during medical procedures such as dialysis and heart surgery.
Heparin is associated with a risk of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), a serious immune-mediated adverse reaction that can lead to thrombosis. Patients should be closely monitored for signs and symptoms of HIT.
