Hexachlorophene is a topical antiseptic and disinfectant. It belongs to the class of bisphenols and functions by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell death. It was once widely used but is now restricted due to potential neurotoxicity.
For topical disinfection and treatment of skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
Outcome:
Neurotoxicity, including vacuolar encephalopathy.
Mechanism:
Immature blood-brain barrier.
Outcome:
Increased systemic absorption and risk of toxicity.
Mechanism:
Damaged skin barrier.
Outcome:
Potential for increased absorption of hexachlorophene.
Mechanism:
Corticosteroids can thin the skin.
