Hexaminolevulinate is a photosensitizing agent used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is a prodrug that is metabolized to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), a fluorescent compound that accumulates in certain types of cells, including cancer cells. When exposed to light of a specific wavelength, PpIX produces reactive oxygen species that damage the targeted cells. This is primarily used in the detection and treatment of certain cancers and skin conditions.
