Irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains two active ingredients: irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a thiazide diuretic. Irbesartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels, leading to a decrease in blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide helps the body eliminate excess salt and water, further contributing to lower blood pressure. This combination offers a synergistic effect in managing hypertension, especially in cases where monotherapy is insufficient.
Used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) when monotherapy is inadequate.
Outcome:
Increased risk of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal impairment.
Mechanism:
Synergistic effects on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
Outcome:
Increased risk of hypotension
Mechanism:
Additive vasodilatory effects.
Outcome:
Slight decrease in absorption of irbesartan
Mechanism:
Changes in gastric pH
Most likely new formulation: sustained-release combination (2025, 30% confidence)
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low probability (<5%) of a major regulatory change for irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide in the next 2 years.
