Brand: Avapro, Aprovel, Karvea, Irsartan
Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking angiotensin II, irbesartan helps relax and widen blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. It is also used to treat diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
For treating high blood pressure and diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Outcome:
Increased risk of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal impairment.
Mechanism:
Synergistic effects on the renin-angiotensin system.
Outcome:
Additive hypotensive effect.
Mechanism:
Increased fluid and sodium loss.
Outcome:
May slightly increase irbesartan levels.
Mechanism:
Inhibition of CYP450 enzymes.
Most likely new formulation: combination therapy with other antihypertensives for improved efficacy (2025, 70% confidence).
Based on current usage trends and clinical trial data, there is a low ( <5%) likelihood of any major regulatory changes to Irbesartan's status in the next 5 years.
