Isocarboxazid is a non-selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) primarily used to treat depression. It belongs to the hydrazine class of MAOIs. Isocarboxazid works by preventing the breakdown of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain, thereby increasing their availability and potentially improving mood.
For the treatment of depression.
Isocarboxazid carries a black box warning for an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults (up to 24 years of age) with major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders. Close monitoring is required, especially during initiation of therapy and dosage adjustments.
